OVERVIEW
Heart Foundation's Healthy Active by Design program, originating in Western Australia, provides a practical guide to consider health benefits in the built environment. With the program being rolled out nationwide, Healthy Active by Design (HAbD) needed a new digital platform that communicated their tools and resources effectively.
CHALLENGE
The primary challenge that HAbD faced was helping the likes of planners, developers plus members of the government and community find academic information, evidence and resources quickly and easily, in order to support their proposals and plans for a healthier environment. This support was vital to advocate for this type of thinking, to be healthy and active with smarter environmental design. Finding ways to communicate such a large amount of vital academic information also posed a strong challenge in the project.
SOLUTION
We created a bespoke digital platform with all content being accessible and easy to find. Collapsible academic content and the ability to anchor points of interest are an integral part of the design solution as they make reading academic evidence an easy and informative process. The immense impact that HAbD has is limitless and continues to grow. The program benefits all community members, in a number of different ways. Kids are more likely to play outside and coworkers are motivated to take time away from their desks and enjoy the environment they are in. The initiative also promotes a change in overall thinking when designing and developing in the modern world. It encourages people to consider all kinds of health benefits when they're designing spaces.
Other key features include an advanced case study filtering system to allow for users to quickly and easily find documentation or academic sources. The ability to make large information expandable and retractable, as well as increased accessibility quality and size of images, makes the information on the site appear inviting and seamless. We also implemented the ability to anchor specific points of interest in academic research, making it easier for planners to write proposals and have the evidence to support their plans. Easy and quick access to design features and areas of interest and a unique mobile design approach of the features on the home page provide an enjoyable experience for all users, on all devices.
